BIM Building Scanning Services
Building Scanning Services
A BIM building scanning service is usually the first and most important step in a BIM project involving an existing building. Recon building scans are photorealistic and record a building’s dimensions and contents quickly and precisely. A detailed software model is then created from these plans.
The Building Scanning Process
A building scan is done using 3D pointcloud or high definition survey. Laser scanners are placed in multiple locations - everything inside a 360 degree sphere of each scanner is recorded, including building details that are unlit or hidden behind ceilings and walls. A photographic representation of the building’s exterior is captured at the same time. The data from each scan is then combined into a 3D pointcloud, and the exact locations of the building’s contents are determined using coordinates that have been surveyed. If required, top external details such as windows and roofs are captured using drones and integrated into the scan data.
Applying the Model to BIM Software
This can be done in a variety of ways depending on the scan’s purpose. The results of the building scan can be analysed on their own, but usually they will be put into standard GIS or CAD software - many software packages are now able to do this directly. Recon’s experts can also use our specialist software to prepare CAD drawings and create full BIM models.
The Benefits of a BIM Building Scanning Service
Utilising a building scan to BIM approach brings benefits at every stage of the redesign or renovation process. Laser scanning eliminates the risk of human error that comes with a manual site measure, capturing a building’s current condition more quickly and precisely. With the use of a BIM model from the scan, consistent 3D data is shared by all project stakeholders and includes clash detection features, ensuring that plans are coordinated. It is even possible to check for errors as you build by applying 3D scans to your existing model and allowing the software to find any inconsistencies.
